The Board is responsible for the setting and oversight of Harworth Group plc's strategy - to promote, develop and utilise our existing portfolio, in addition to replenishing our asset base with attractive investment opportunities, to enhance net asset value and to increase our recurring income base.
Jonson Cox is the non-executive Chairman of Harworth Group plc. Jonson joined the Board on 15 November 2010 to lead the former UK Coal plc through its 2012 restructuring. His early career was with Royal Dutch Shell Group and Kelda Group plc and he joined AWG plc (later Anglian Water Group plc) as Chief Executive from January 2004 until March 2010. He was a non-executive director of Wincanton plc from October 2005 to May 2014. In November 2012 he was appointed Chairman of the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat). He also serves as a senior policy advisor to infrastructure fund I Squared Capital LLP and as non-executive Chairman of Denmark Holdco Limited. Jonson has served as Chairman of Coalfield Resources plc and of Harworth Estates Property Group Limited since the 2012 restructuring. Having led Coalfield Resources plc through its 2015 acquisition of Harworth Estates Property Group Limited, he now continues in a non-executive role as Chairman of Harworth Group plc.
Owen Michaelson is the Chief Executive of Harworth Group plc. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the remediation of brownfield land and has held executive roles at the Peel Group, Black Country Properties and Viridor. Prior to becoming the Chief Executive of Harworth Group plc, he took over the stand alone operations of the Harworth Estates Group at the commencement of the restructuring of the UK Coal Group in August 2010. He fully established the business as a recognised developer of brownfield land, prior to the company becoming fully listed in March 2015 under the Harworth Group plc name.Contact Owen Michaelson
Andrew joined Harworth Group as Finance Director on 1 January 2016 and has executive responsibility for all of the company’s financial functions. Prior to joining Harworth, Andrew was Finance Director of Viridor, the recycling and renewable energy company, for five years. He has also previously held a number of other senior finance roles, including Chief Financial Officer at Balfour Beatty Capital and Global Head of Corporate Finance at Bovis Lend Lease. Lisa, a Chartered Accountant, was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive director and is chair of the renumeration committee. She is now the nominated Senior Independent Director for the business. Lisa was formerly Chief Financial Officer of Sea Containers Limited, Managing Director of Capita Learning and Development and has held senior divisional roles at Cendant Inc and BPP Holdings Plc. She is also a director of Everything But The Cow Limited.
Steven has served on the board as a non-executive director since 2010, representing the Peel Group. Peel remains the Company’s largest shareholder. Steven is Chief Executive of the Peel Group of Companies and also brings the extensive experience of the Peel Group in brownfield land remediation and regeneration. He is also a non-executive director of Pinewood Group plc and an alternate director of Intu Properties plc.
Martyn joined the Board as the nominee of the Pension Protection Fund on 24 March 2015. He was appointed to the Board of Harworth Estates Property Group Limited as the nominee of the Industry Wide Mining Pension Scheme Trustees in 2013 and was retained by the Pension Protection Fund when they acquired the Trustees interest in Harworth Estates Property Group Limited in 2014. Martyn originally trained as an accountant and as a banker. He has spent the majority of his career in banking, most recently from 2001 to 2007 with Barclays Capital as Managing Director, Real Estate Finance. Since leaving Barclays he has pursued a portfolio business career, which in 2012 involved a takeover with fellow directors of the South of England based Welbeck Land real estate business. Martyn now acts as Finance Director for Welbeck Land and also maintains other interests in debt advisory and healthcare.
Anthony joined the board as an Independent non-executive director on 24 March 2015. After early finance roles with Scottish & Newcastle Breweries from 1986, he joined Morrison Homes Limited as Finance Director in 1990. In 2000 he was appointed Managing Director of Scotland-based AWG Property Limited. He has consequently overseen the workout and extraction of value from an extensive commercial and residential portfolio across the UK & Ireland and its transformation into a strategic and income generating portfolio. He had previously been on the Board of Harworth Estates Property Group Limited as an Independent non-executive director since 2012.
Andrew Cunningham joined the Board of Harworth Group in 2016 as an Independent Non-Executive Director. Andrew graduated from Cambridge University and then trained as a chartered accountant with Deloitte Haskins and Sells (a predecessor firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers) in London. He worked in their Nairobi and Bristol offices before being made a corporate finance / audit partner in Newcastle. In 1996 he was appointed finance director of Grainger plc, which was to become the UK’s largest listed residential investor, and CEO in 2009. He retired from Grainger at the end of 2015. Andrew has served on the advisory boards of Durham University Business School and Cambridge University Land Economy Department and was a member of the policy committee of the British Property Federation. Andrew is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
The General Counsel and Company Secretary provides internal legal advice and is responsible for ensuring Companies Act and regulatory compliance. The role also involves the review and provision of advice on commercial tenders and contract matters and all legal aspects of corporate transactions.
Chris Birch joined Harworth Group as General Counsel and Group Company Secretary on 6 June 2016. Chris, a qualified solicitor, joined the company from Eversheds LLP in Leeds where he was the interim head of the restructuring team. He possesses a wide range of legal and commercial skills including mergers and acquisitions, financing, commercial contracts, property sales, acquisitions and employment & pensions law. Phil joined Harworth in June 2011 to develop and implement new strategies for the property portfolio. Prior to this, Phil worked with the Peel Group in their corporate development team, with responsibilities in corporate finance and developing new business initiatives focussing on energy and environmental sectors. Ian Ball is the Director of Income Generation and has been with the company since September 2011. He has full responsibility for the management of all existing and future income generating assets within the business. Ian is a Chartered Surveyor by background, having worked for a number of European Real Estate funds in London prior to spending the last eight years in the real estate banking sector in the north of England. Gary joined Harworth in September 2011 and has experience in land acquisition in property and environmental sectors. Previously Development Manager in the Natural Resources department before being promoted to Director for Corporate Development, Gary also set up the company’s Estates, Environment and Safety division. The Capital Growth segment of the business reports to Phil Wilson and includes our Strategic Land, Major Projects and Technical teams within our business. The team focuses on maximising value by developing the property portfolio and includes planning & development activity, value engineering and proactive asset management, thereby bringing sites to the market.
Tim joined Harworth in February 2007 heading up our Strategic Land Team responsible for the planning and promotion of new development opportunities. He joined from William Davis Ltd, a privately owned Midlands-based developer where he held the position of Urban Regeneration Director. Prior to this Tim, who is a Chartered Surveyor, held a senior position within the Midlands office of English Partnerships where he was involved in a number of high profile regeneration schemes across the region.Contact Tim Love
Stuart is the Planning and Development Manager in the Strategic Land team at Harworth. He joined in August 2008, and prior to this, he was Planning Director at Bellway Homes and has also worked for a privately owned developer. Peter is the Director of Development and leads Harworths Major Projects Team responsible for the identification, delivery and management of all large scale development opportunities across the Harworth portfolio covering large scale residential, commercial, leisure and mixed use developments. Peter, a Chartered Engineer, has a wide range of experience in the delivery of large, complex developments. Duncan joined Harworth in 2007 as a Development Manager and has since been promoted to Associate Director of Major Projects. He is responsible for Harworths’ major developments including the Waverley new community scheme and the North Gawber residential development scheme. Prior to joining Harworth, Duncan, a Chartered Planner, worked at Atisreal in their planning and development team, advising a range of commercial and residential developers. Chris is one of Harworth’s Associate Directors for Major Projects after joining the team in 2013 and has responsibility for some of Harworth’s latest schemes, including Logistics North in Bolton and Prince of Wales in Pontefract. Brendan joined Harworth’s team in November 2013 from WYG, a global management and technical consultancy, where he provided infrastrucural and environmental advice to developers of large-scale development and regeneration schemes. He has adapted his civil engineering background to lead and deliver a number of multi-discipline, large-scale infrastructure projects. Adam, a Quantity Surveyor, joined UK Coal plc from Tarmac Construction in 1995 to work on development and infrastructure projects across the mining business, and then development of business parks post mining operations. Following a successful spell within our Operations team in the delivery of 1m tonnes of coal fines since 2010, Adam is now a Project Manager within our Major Projects team, overseeing the remediation of our key sites in Yorkshire and the Midlands.Contact Adam O’Brien
James is one of our Project Managers within the Development team. He will be responsible for assisting the delivery of infrastructure projects on some of our major schemes including the Harworth Regeneration and Chatterley Valley. Before joining Harworth in April 2016, he worked at The Banks Group where he managed their portfolio of operational wind farm sites. Rachael joined Harworth in June 2016 as Assistant Development Surveyor to support the development of Waverley, Torne Park and Riverdale Park. The Income Generation team reports to Ian Ball and includes our Business Space, Building Delivery, Natural Resources and Operations team. This part of the business focuses on retaining selected land and property assets to generate growth and a long-term recurring income steam from directly-built commercial units, our seven business parks, rent generated from low-carbon energy sources and from the sale of minerals and aggregates.
David was appointed by the company in March 2014 and has delivered a range of new commercial units on our land, including at Logistics North and the Advanced Manufacturing Park. He is now the Director of Building Delivery and will be responsible for the delivery of new buildings across some of our key sites, including Waverley, Logistics North and Gateway 36 as we look to grow our income portfolio. David previously worked for St Paul’s developments where he had responsibility for the technical delivery of their key regeneration programmes.Contact David Elliott
Robert joined Harworth in November 2014 and is a Project Manager in the Building Delivery and Infrastructure Team, working with David Elliott on our key commercial sites. A Chartered Surveyor, Robert’s background has encompassed Project and Cost Management roles with leading consultants and developers including EC Harris, Capita, Reland and Priority Sites. He was most recently a director at heritage specialists Prospect Archaeology before joining the company. His role has involved the delivery of infrastructure and construction projects at Swadlincote and Gedling and he will be involved in bringing forward schemes at Flass Lane, Ellington and Waverley amongst others.Contact Robert Cole
David, a Chartered Surveyor, is the Director of our Business Space Division and is primarily responsible for overseeing the promotion and strategic asset management of our national Business Space portfolio to grow our income base. In addition, David also works to identify and progress speculative and pre-let direct development opportunities on our key sites as we continue to enhance our portfolio; building on the success of our schemes at Waverley, Logistics North and Gateway 36. Liz joined the company in December 2012 and is involved in overseeing the day-to-day running of our business parks portfolio. Her responsibilities include managing the relationship between the company and our existing tenants in addition to negotiating & completing lease agreements with new occupiers. Les joined Harworth in 2003 and has 20 years experience in supervisory, management and training roles in the engineering, manufacturing and retail sectors. Eddie worked in the property and mining business of UK Coal Plc for 19 years and has been a director of the property business since 2002, prior to joining Harworth. As our Natural Resources Director, he is responsible for recognising opportunities in the Energy and Environmental sectors that identify and promote opportunities from our extensive land holdings. Chris is a Chartered Minerals & Waste Planner and Charted Mineral Surveyor, and joined Harworth in June 2014 from Wardell Armstrong’s Mineral Estates Team in Newcastle upon Tyne. As Associate Director within the Natural Resources team, Chris is responsible for the management of its portfolio of mineral and waste management assets, working with development partners to make the best use of our land on projects including site restoration, recovery of coal and minerals, green energy production, and waste management.Contact Chris Warren
Hannah joined Harworth’s Natural Resources Division in 2013. Responsible for the day to day management of the Natural Resources tenancy portfolio, Hannah also works to identify new areas of opportunity and development, with a particular focus on the energy sector. Shaun joined Harworth in January 2011 having worked for UK Coal plc. for 17 years where he was an assistant civil engineer in deep mining. Shaun is our Operations Director, and is responsible for the demolition and reclamation of a number of key sites across the UK and for the supply of coal slurry and aggregates from our sites to industry. Tim recently joined Haworth in March 2016 having gained client side experience at Hargreaves plc working under the Land & Estates Director and responsible for day to day management of their property portfolio and liaising with stakeholders, joint venture partners and external consultants to enhance value through obtaining alternative planning consent and site acquisitions. Previously Tim has worked as a Business Space agent for property consultants King Sturge and Lambert Smith Hampton providing Acquisition and Disposal advice to a wide variety of commercial developers and occupiers. Richard joined Harworth in April 2015, having previously worked for Hanson UK plc for 13 years where he spent the last 8 years in quarry management positions in Devon and South Wales. He is now the responsible manager for the quarry operations at our Rufford Colliery site, for coal reclamation and carrying out future restoration works in partnership with the wildlife trust. Callum joined Harworth in January 2017 as an Assistant Asset Manager and will be working within the Business Space team. Previously Callum graduated Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Real Estate BSc (Hons) before gaining experience working for an independent property auction company based in north Nottinghamshire. Iain Griffin is the Acquisitions Manager for the North and is responsible for growing our landbank in the Northern regions. Having been with the company since October 2014, Iain was previously one of our Development Managers involved in the delivery of a number of Harworth high-profile developments. Iain is a chartered planning and development surveyor. He previously ran his own independent development management practice, IG Consulting, advising landowners including corporates, industrialists, high wealth private individuals and local authorities. Andy Roberts is the Acquisitions Manager for the Midlands and is responsible for finding and securing new development opportunities across the southern regions. Jenny Cutler joined Harworth as Financial Accounting Manager in September 2014, and is now the Group Financial Controller heading up our finance team. Jenny was the Group Financial Controller at Palletways Group Limited and, prior to that, was an Audit Manager at KPMG. Kathrine Cheetham joined Harworth in November 2013 as Finance Assistant. She previously worked for many years at Blundell’s estate agents in Sheffield, dealing with both residential sales and lettings accounts. Iain Thomson joined Harworth in September 2013 and has responsibility for communications, strategic partnerships and the company’s input into national policy matters. Iain has held a number of policy and service improvement roles in both the private and public sectors and previously worked at Doncaster Council. He also holds a non-Executive Director position at Flying Futures CIC, a Doncaster-based Social Enterprise that delivers sports, arts and diversionary programmes for young people. He won the 2015 LSH Enterprise Award for his work on the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District concept and is a graduate of both Sheffield and Warwick Universities.Contact Iain Thomson
Rebecca joined Harworth in March 2016 and will be assisting in the coordination of all communications, both internally and externally. With a degree and background in marketing, she will also be responsible for the execution and development of the company’s marketing activities both on and offline, as well as implementing the changes needed to ensure a more sales orientated and streamline approach. The Estates, Environment and Safety team is responsible for dealing with all legacy issues that come from our land whilst also maintaining all records that relate to the company's 22,000 acres of land under ownership or management.
John joined Harworth in September 2015 following over three decades in the mining industry, and is Associate Director of Estate,Environment & Safety. He has significant experience in safety and environmental management, the remediation and legacy management of sites and the subsequent management of stakeholders. A chartered surveyor by profession, he was the company surveyor and minerals manager at UK Coal Production Ltd where he managed the mining and estates portfolio. He holds an MBA and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.Contact John Hind
Ian joined the company in 1998 following 20 years working as a mechanical engineer at a number of coal mines throughout the North of England. His initial involvement at Harworth concerned the transformation of former coal mines to Business Parks. As our land makes the transition from operational mining sites to alternative uses and development platforms, Ian’s current role is to assess and mitigate any health, safety and environmental risks.Contact Ian Rogers
Mark joined Harworth in March 2014 as part of the creation of the Environment, Safety and Estates Management division. Mark is responsible for producing accurate land ownership records for the company and in implementing a new GIS platform to improve its land data management. Shay joined Harworth in September 2011 following nearly three decades at UK Coal as a Surface Electrical Engineer, based predominantly at sites in Nottinghamshire. Shelagh joined the Harworth team in 2008 working for the Directors and as the PA to the Chief Executive. She is now Senior PA and also assists the Executive Directors whilst still working for the Chief Executive. Shelagh is generally the first point of contact for the Company and ensures the smooth running of the departments. Prior to this, she has worked within UK Coal since January 1998 working for the Managing Directors of Surface Mines, and subsequently for the Managing Directors of Deep Mines and H.R.Contact Shelagh Foweather
Joanne joined Harworth in 2006 as a secretary for the Estates Surveyor, then working as PA to the Director of Natural Resources. Her current role is PA to Executive Directors, where she also assists with HR functions and offers admin support for the wider team. Laura has been with the company since 1993, initially as receptionist, then moving on to HR Secretary followed by PA to the Chief Executive and Chairman. Laura is now the PA to the Chairman, FD and MD and administrative assistant to the Company Secretarial department and HR.
