Rio Tinto decommissioned the site and removed plant and machinery prior to demolishing a number of buildings and cleaning the area to return its operating permit to the industry regulator, the Environment Agency. Following this, Harworth then implemented its own demolition works to remove the remaining buildings and structures onsite that were not reusable including the Alcan Smelter chimneys.
Further operational work has since been carried out including the provision of new services to the site such as water and electricity, in addition to starting the remediation of the land in preparation for the future phasing of development over the next four years.
With transformation works still ongoing to create the platform to develop and build new employment space, two of the commercial units that were retained and considered suitable for reuse have since been leased and occupied by Lynx Precast and H-Mix.
