Harworth announces opening of woodland scheme at Highthorn, Northumberland

Harworth Group plc, a leading land and property regenerator of sustainable developments, announces the opening of Highthorn woodland following the planting of 150,000 trees. The scheme spans over 200 acres and delivers enhanced biodiversity and a natural space for local wildlife and communities to thrive.

Highthorn woodland includes a mix of predominantly native tree species with some  evergreen species.  There is a parcel of land which sits outside and to the south of the planting area which extends to around 100 acres and is being explored as a potential habitat enhancement area. The ambition is to create new wetland to support ground-nesting birds and other native wildlife species.

The project was supported by through an England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) grant and was brought to life through a series of Community Planting Days organised by Harworth, in collaboration with Kids Plant Trees and Savills Forestry, and involved local residents and three nearby primary schools.

The woodland forms part of Harworth’s broader vision to regenerate former industrial sites into sustainable landscapes that bring long-term social and environmental value. It also contributes to the delivery of Harworth’s Net Zero Pathway and its ambition to be operationally Net Zero by 2030.

“The launch of Highthorn woodland is another example of how Harworth delivers nature-based solutions that benefit both the environment and local communities. It’s been fantastic to see the involvement of local schools and residents in helping shape this new space, which will continue to grow in value and ecological importance over the years to come.”
